I cannot judge for the rest, but our results 15 have been grossly misrepresented. The degrees of separation we computed on Facebook are four, not five (the title "Four degrees of separation" should have suggested something). Five is the distance, but the previous value for the distance was seven, not six. The algorithm and the software implementation we used were developed entirely at the Laboratory for Web Algorithmics of the UniversitÃ&#xa0 degli Studi di Milano by Paolo Boldi, Marco Rosa and Sebastiano Vigna (myself). We presented the algorithm at WWW 2011, and Lars Backstrom agreed on applying our software to the Facebook graph. Lars and Johan Ugander managed all the Facebook data-handling part, as we were sending them Java jars containing the software that would have computed the degrees (moving the data was, of course, impossible). This is as far from "in-house" research as I can imagine.
